6/1 reading

In Nam Le’s “Love and Honour and Pity and Pride and Compassion and Sacrifice ,” a recurring idea in the short story was sacrifice.  Le said “We forgive any sacrifice by our parents, so long as it is not made in our name.”  However, all the sacrifices that Le’s father went through were indeed for Le, when he named his son after his war ravaged country and when he burned the written story which chronicle his life struggles.  I found it interesting that his father tried very hard to forget about the sacrifices he made.  He refused to talk about the Vietnam War, except in the instance where he was drunk, and didn’t want his son to publish the story about it.  I think this was meant to show just how greatly the Vietnam War had affected him, and I think Le didn’t quite understand this.
