Week 8: Merchants of Cool
Week 8:
Merchants of Cool
The video
discuss how teenage boys are “mook” and teenage girls are “midriff”. Boys are
into things that are loud, crud, and in your face. Girls are into things are
about the body and sexualizing it. In the video, the boys enjoy watching WWE.
One of the wrestler talked about the pop that draws in the attention of the
young boys. The pop is the “wow” and the unexpected that keeps the teens
watching WWE. For teenage girls, they want to be notice. They want to be older
than they really are. In the video, a 13-year-old girl is auditioning to be a star.
Even though she is 13, she considers herself to be 16-17 years old. The video
said that teenage boys act younger than their age while teenage girls act older
than their age. I thought this was interesting. When I was in high school I felt
like I was more mature than my male classmates. In high school I was more focus
on my school work than I was about sex or having a boyfriend. I feel like this
can vary between people. I come from a second-generation Asian American point
of view so my interest was different than my white friends. In the video, most
of the people were white and that is a representation of that group. Someone
like me, who has a different background and is limited to media will have a
different take on what is “cool”.
