Week 7: Tony loves Kelly

Week 7: Tony loves Kelly
I could relate to Kelly and how she feels. In my culture, you must get married when you get pregnant. You must leave your family and become someone else’s daughter. You must love them like you love your own family. This system is patriarchal and unfair for young ladies. Kelly is stuck in the middle where she want to pursue her dreams and go to college but she also has to stay home and be a good daughter-in-law who cooks and clean for the whole family. Many time when this happens in these culture, the elders would blame the daughter for going out, for getting pregnant, and for not being responsible. That is a big burden for the young ladies out there who lives are changed because of situations like this. They can’t say or go against the system because it would be disrespecting to the elders but there would be no changes in the system. What would I do if I was in Kelly’s situation? I wouldn’t know what to choose. Should I stay home, take care of my child and be the perfect daughter-in-law or should I go against what everyone is telling me and continue school while my family is struggle to find food and pay the bills? While Kelly is feeling all these emotions, Tony doesn’t understand how important finishing school is to her and how much pressure she gets from his family. Tony doesn’t understand because he had the male privilege of not having to worry about these little things. One way to solve this is to make the males realize they have privilege and make them use their privilege to help the females.
