Week 5
"Globalization and the Public Cartographies of Vietnam Idol"
I watched
American Idol since Kelly Clarkson. I find it interesting how the producers
would take a show like this and place in a developing country with expectations
that it will have the same results as the United States. The idea of
meritocracy that success depends on your effort and talent can be seen in
Vietnam Idol. They participants come from all over to audition and rehearsal
day and night for a chance to be the number one. If your talented then you get selected
and if you work hard enough you could be top 10. That is not the case here.
There is a digital divide where on certain people have access to the show.
Those who lived in rural areas without internet or electricity cannot watch or
vote. Also, those who live in rural areas were not able to audition because the
auditions were only held in urban cities. The digital divide limited the participant
and viewers. Because the show was only able to reach a limited number of viewers,
the producers didn’t get the results that they wanted from the viewers. The
producers then blame the contestants for not being dramatic like the American
contestant in American Idol. You can’t expect the same ending from two different
book so why would you expect the same results from two different countries?
