Mass media is a way to feed expectations into someone’s subconscious
norms that should be followed, it is a form of socialization and globalization.
When I read this article it reminded me of how media is always sending
messages, for example that they only want the best of the richest and that they
on purpose put all these barriers so that the underprivileged do not get to
participate. They make sure to only recruit in the richest areas so that those
that don't have the money to travel to the rural areas can't attend. This sends
a message that you only get to have these privileges if you were born with the
resources or creates this idea that if you work hard for something then you
will receive it. It reminds me of how I grew up in a very low income community
in which you were always set up for failure. The good schools were an hour away
on bus and that were near me walking distance (three miles tops) had really low
test scores and teachers would never last for more than a year. Just yesterday
I was looking at my sister's lexile reading scores and how throughout middle
school the scores kept dropping and once she got to high school the scored
raise by almost 300. She says that it is because she has a teacher (who happens
to be my mentor) who really cares about her and challenges her in and outside
of class. All the hegemonic little things add up to create this hegemonic
structure where you are set up for failure and do not get to have the same
opportunities as others.
