To recognize and absorb those
differences within the larger, overarching framework of what is essentially an
American conception of the world”.
American pop culture has
a strong influence on the rest the of the world since it is the capital of that
entertainment industry. By bringing the tv show “idol” to different countries
was an attempt to allow countries to display their music and talents. With
Vietnam idol there was some contradictions. The first season the producer
blamed the participants were holding back their emotions, and they should be
more emotional and wild. But usually Asians are typically quiet and reserve. So
in a sense the producer wanted the participants to be more entertaining like
the American version. The winner of the show started out as “childlike virgin”
no make up or anything and transformed to a “sexy adult icon”. I believe the
show’s intentions wanted to showcase the talents the Vietnamese people have but
instead transforming them into “western” ideals of sexy. As the show went on in
other Asian countries, at the end they had an Asian Idol that included
countries like India, Indonesia, Malaysia. They had to sing one song in their
native language and one English song. That right there shows how much American
culture influences on pop culture. Another example is kpop Big Bang, BTS, in a
sense American pop culture has influenced the kpop industry. Hip hop
choreography and rap are heavily influenced by American hip hop. There is even
a Korean rap show called Show me the Money, it’s kind of like American Idol but
just rap. All participants have been influenced and inspired by American
rappers.
