Shopping For Pleasure By John Fiske

I found this article to be sexist because it doesn’t talk about men “who could buy things for pleasure so they don’t have to work on love.” I’m sure men shop for pleasure too, not just women. As for the example of The Price is Right, I find that to be subjective. The show isn’t targeted to women, but to a wide audience which is general people. That’s why the show has a wide demographic. I think everyone has shopped for pleasure and it shouldn’t be aimed at just women. Just because when you shop you get pleasure out of your things, doesn’t mean you shop to avoid things. I did agree that ads and slogans when they first began were targeted to woman. Woman were in charge of taking care of the house. I found it interesting how shopping was a form of resistance when in the documentary, Merchant of Cool, it was a capital view.  I could see how shopping could be a form of everyday resistance when people refuse to shop in certain places because of their products or by how the company treats their employees. This applies to Asians because Asians work in retail and majority of the products are made in sweatshops in Asian countries. I'm a conscious consumer like others because I care about where my products come from and the consideration people work in. I also like being aware of what company's political stances are. For instance I stopped shopping at Forever21 after learning about how badly they treat their employees to meet the demand of cheap prices for their customers. A lot of apparel stores are going out of business right now like Wet Seal. Rue21 and Aeropostle, apparel stores that are targeted to female teens more than male teens have both closed down a lot of their stores. I liked both stores because they have cheap prices. Now taking into consideration the bigger picture in how companies get their cheap price explains why these stores are going out of business. They're not making enough money which effects people across seas in sweatshops making these cheap clothes. They'll be out of a job, but they won't have to suffer because of their job anymore.
