Roy S. & Kelly Loves Tony
In
the video, Kelly Loves Tony there are a lot of examples of resistance. The
video also relates to South Asian deportation laws. Kelly became pregnant after
dating Tony for three months. Kelly is passionate about school and making
something out of her life, however Tony didn’t grow up in a school setting.
Even the way he speaks is uneducated. Its’s obvious Tony cares about Kelly, but
he doesn’t understand her need to go to school and continue her education. I believe
that’s because for one Tony wasn’t in school at all and when he was he probably
didn’t get the support he needed leading him to join a gang. Kelly is stuck in
a position where she wants to please her family and follow tradition, but still
embrace American traditions. She resisted drinking a ginger tea which in Mien culture
one drinks after giving birth. She did drink the tea, but not as much as was
advised by her mother. So she tries to keep up with tradition, but also staying
true to her own beliefs. From the portion of the video I saw in class, there’s
no mention of Tony talking about the wedding. There’s no conclusion on whether
he will marry Kelly or if he even wants to. He doesn’t speak about probably
because he’s more concerned with staying in the country. Tony is subjected to
South Asian and immigrant laws because he was convicted in the past which was
discussed in a previous article we read in class. Although Tony was able to
find support and a job to help himself and stay abiding laws, he still faces
being deported. It’s sad because although he’s in the U.S. he wasn’t in the
same position as others in better location to receive a proper education and
more support. Kelly is in the same location, but even she lacked support or
else she might not have ended up pregnant while in high school.
The
Roy article was very eye opening for how the LGBT community got started and the
internal issues within it. The gender issue in which females don’t have as much
support as males because they have more access to computers and because males
have better jobs. There’s another problem where not everyone’s voice can be
heard through the websites because of demographics which aren’t included.
People who are in rural areas aren’t getting the support they need and married
women who aren’t aware of the site don’t receive the support they could have.
There’s also online bullying within the own community which is sad. One
solution could be to find another way to reach out to those in rural areas, try
to go to them or provide a service or start a program where they too can receive
support. That program can then branch off and have it’s own services for women
so everyone can be heard.
