Orientalism Film Journal 5/16 - Leigh Bagood
I can definitely see how the orientalist perspective is perpetuated by the media in the U.S., especially news media. Amidst U.S. conflicts in the Middle East, the news focuses primarily on the politics that shine an inferior light on those less developed countries. The messages that are often conveyed by the media is that the U.S. is a super power or a savior, bringing civilization and democracy to the East. The way the media emphasizes only one side of the story, the American side, definitely plays into the orient-occident binary. This in turn impacts overall societal perceptions of immigrants to America as somehow less American because of the regions they originate from.
