Omar as Guest Lecturer
I really
liked all of Omar’s topics today. I usually actually do read the terms of
agreement, but when it came to social media I didn’t make my own accounts. I
wasn’t aware of social media until my junior year in high school. My friends
told me I should have a Facebook account so they made me one. I am aware of how
social media plays into our everyday lives and how we allow it to. It’s more
difficult to not allow it to play a part in your life. Social media plays such
a huge role that now when people say they don’t have any social media accounts,
we assume something is wrong with them. Everything is so commercial now,
everything we use and do has a marketing message behind it. It’s easier to
adapt then to avoid it. The documentary showed how marketing teams make what
they want or think is popular become popular has definitely affected our
culture today. For example, MTV is still popular, but it’s no longer for music
it’s for entertainment that sells things like ideas and lifestyles. Today’s
reality shows are made for the same person the mook was created which was for
money. Watching the sketch today in class it made me think about Asian
youtubers I watch and support because of the content they create. I love
TimothyDeLaGhetto and Anna Akana because they’re both Asian Americans who are
in the same industry (Entertainment) and instead of lashing out at what’s wrong
with society and how Asians are treated they make skits that show it. Anna
Akana has done skits where she shows “diversity” with a group of Asians and one
white male. Both youtubers talk about Asian stereotypes and how they’ve dealt
with their own personal experiences and everyday issues like the sketch we
watched today in class.
