In the articles Alien
Encounters and Arabs, Islam and the Dogmas of the West portray the modern-day hierarchy
of race. In the article by Edward Said, defines Orientals and how it’s
represented by Westerners. One example used by Americans, henna from South
Asia. Americans used it as an aesthetic body art and ignore the traditions it
came with it. It degrades the purpose and values it has with a culture when
Westerners use it without knowledge and appreciation. One example is when
people get tattoo of Chinese characters because of its aesthetic, at least know
what the word means or trust your artist not to put "chick noodle
soup". On tumblr I've seen many mistakes of these tattoos, either they
don't make sense, it means something different, or something completely wrong.
Like what's going to stop me from tattooing beef chow fun on your back when you
don't even know what it means. It would be the same of Asian people got tattoo
of English words like water, fire and power. It's also the same for language,
if you're only limited to "Hi" please don't come up to me and assume
I speak that dialect of Chinese. If you say "ni hao" to me, you
better know how to carry out the rest of the conversation, and realize when I
say "dui bu qi, wo ji shou guang dong hua" that I don't speak
mandarin.
