The articles for today
deals with assimilation of western ideas in Asian American culture. Assimilation
mainly deals with the second-generation Asian Americans. In Lowe’s article mentions
the preservation of eastern culture and western culture, in a sense a biculture.
In Kurup’s article second – generation seems to struggle from first generation
prejudice from assimilating western ideas. As a 2nd generation,
there are a lot of things my mom doesn’t like me doing. My dad being a American
at least there are some understanding. For example my mom doesn’t approve that
I’m gay, she pleads me to keep quite and not tell the family because she will
be embarrassed. She thinks it’s a mental disease that can be cured, well she
can have fun with that. My dad was understanding when I told him. I asked why
don’t you have a problem with that, why are you ok with anything. He said “you
know my time I saw a black person, I asked my old what happened to his skin? My
uncle told me those were n*ggers and you treat them like dogs, I thought my
uncle was sick in the head, I was friends with all the black kids in my school even
if I got beat up for it”. He went on to “I used to have a best friend in the
navy, one day he was yelling at a gay guy calling him fag and other names, I ended
the friendship right then and there”. If the western idea of being able to express
yourself I don’t really see what’s so bad about being happy. Growing up with
parents from different backgrounds is quite conflicting, but we try to learn
from each other.
