I’m
half Thai, so I’ve watched X-Factor Thailand and I see how the show is similar
to the American and British X-Factor. I also see how each individual country incorporates
their own cultures and subcultures into their show. I’ve also watched Master
Chef Thailand and I’ve watched the version of the show featuring children. They
cook Thai food for one difference between the original, and they have challenges where they must make food from
other countries which makes the show even more entertaining because it’s
embracing culture instead of tearing it down. Another example I thought of was
the show, The Amazing Race, which is an American show but it’s accurate when
featuring other country’s culture which is basically the whole show. The show
doesn’t lie or change a country’s culture. The show keeps it very authentic.
I’ve watched it when it was also in Thailand and of course other countries and
the translations were fair for the season featuring Thailand. I did recognize
some of the other country’s facts as well. The show does do a good job
portraying what’s normal for different cultures. Asian Idol doesn’t represent all
Asian countries. Not even all Asian countries are included, it’s only the four
poorest Asian countries. (pg. 904) Rags to Riches is a neoliberalism idea. The whole concept is to be like
America. They wanted to make their country known and more popular, but they did
it in the wrong way. When you look at other countries and their own versions of
a famous American television shows you can see the differences. The judges
decided what was and wasn’t acceptable for Vietnam Idol. “One judge, Do Truang
Quan, had been criticized by the government and public for his outrageous
comments, telling one contestant for instance, that she had “too strict a dress
code” while trashing another paradoxically for being “too outrageous” (pg.897) The
judges started to have their own standards which made me think of Simon Cowell
and how he became a famous judge for his style. I think that’s probably where
the judges were drawing inspiration from.
