Aoki response 5/4
In the film Aoki, I found it interesting to see Aoki’s personality. Having not really heard of Aoki beforehand as an activist, I was rather surprised by his particular demeanor. He seemed very charismatic and at times funny as he told his stories about being an activist in the past. This goes against a lot of stereotypes that people might have about those like Aoki. That is, being an old, Asian American man. People might expect someone like that to act like a model minority and be passive, quiet, and compliant when it comes to politics. Aoki seemed to be none of these things. He was an activist, and even a leader within the protests as well, and was jailed multiple times due to this. The way he carried himself was also very interesting. I don’t know why, but I would have expected a protest leader to come off as a little more dignified somehow. However after hearing him talk about his experiences as he grew up in Oakland, his demeanor simply made himself seem more authentic and believable.
