5/9 Maira and Said

Both Maira and Said talked about the popular trends that are evident in today’s society, cultural appropriation. Cultural trends that are normal in the East, being adapted by the West loses its cultural meaning. Some examples of “Indo-Chic” are henna, saris, and bindhis. It’s mainly fashion trends that are being viewed as “exotic” by the West. This reminded me of how Native American’s cultural attire was being culturally appropriated, especially around during Halloween time. People who wear those costumes were not showing their respect for Native American culture. Instead, they were insulting the culture. Even though this trend did not originate from the East, it does mean the same as when it’s being exploited by the masses who do not understand or put effort into understanding the context behind it.

This quote caught my eye the most, "institution claims to be racial and ethnic minority equal access" but, on the other hand, "the institution fails to address the needs of the population of color." This is true. Using UC Davis as an example, the school does seem to fulfill its promises in maintaining equality throughout everything.  But, at the same time, it does isolate Asian/Asian-American youths. It's because of this; youths reshape the culture they brought along with them from their home to fit into the American culture. In a larger lens, whenever the minority does not fit with the dominant race, they will need to assimilate. This status quos are untold, but still done, showing that discrimination and racism in and out of institutions still exist.
