5/4 Vietnam Idol

Vietnam Idol gave an interesting and realistic insight into how Vietnamese pop industries turn the country into a capitalist nation through Westernized influence. There is an idea that Vietnam is economically and socially behind other nations, specifically 1st world nations who have achieved that level of advancement. One way that Vietnam aims to catch up is by placing technoculture over the indigenious culture. However, this only happens in big, industrialized cities where people are able to access these types of networks. Not only did Western ideals bring about technoculture, but it asserted other sociocultural ideals such as hypermasculity, heteronormativity, and the sexualization of women. Many people wear typical American clothing and women are now sexualized from a young age to look more mature. One important thing to remember is that this transition isn't localized to just Vietnam, but also other parts of Southeast Asia such as Cambodia and Thailand. Although Western influences is a big factor in these changes, the influence of Korean culture, specifically "K-pop" has brought about important qualities. Many people in Vietnam and other countries are starting to dress more like east asians and the idea of skin lightening is even more popular. Westernization can explain the modernaization and nationalism of Vietnam, but the influence of east Asian cultures can help explain others.
