5/4 Vietnam Idol reading

Vietnam Idol is a singing TV show which models itself on other Western idol type shows such as American Idol. However, it’s first season did not receive very high ratings.  Although the producer of the show blamed the contestants simply “are not as wild” as on other idol shows, there are probably better explanations for the shows shortcomings.  The most obvious one that comes to mind was that, since the show progressed by people actually voting for singers over text and phones, there would likely be a problem given that only ⅕ of the Vietnamese population even had access to internet.  It may have also received low ratings simply because of it’s affiliation with more popular idol shows, such as American Idol, which was popular enough to be aired in nearly 100 countries.  Given the popularity of previous idol shows, it doesn’t seem much of a surprise that Vietnam Idol might seem like a copycat.  However despite following other idol shows general formats, Vietnam Idol still tried to maintain its own originality, which can be seen when the producers of the show expressed that they wanted the show to suit the Vietnamese culture, and even bought the right to the show in Vietnam to ensure this.
