5/4 Bui Response
In Long Bui’s article, “Globalization and the Public Cartographies of Vietnam Idol,” it discusses a lot about the ideas of American culture and ideas are being transferred to Asian culture. The American culture therefore dominates the Asian economy because of this shift leading to a form of neoliberalism. This is because the American culture is so impactful, it takes hold of what is considered popular culture in Asian communities and controls it. So by exploring the show Vietnam Idol, Bui demonstrates a new form of colonialism in which Asian communities and cultures are being dominated by American culture through the use of technology and media. I felt like I can relate to this because in Taiwanese culture, there is a show similar to American Idol and Vietnam Idol called Super Idol in which Taiwanese people perform in singing competitions and try to win. However, I also felt like Asian culture which adapted American culture, have made their way back to American culture. We can see this in KPop in which they adapted American hip hop and dance, but now has become a worldwide sensation, the USA being a part of the audience.
