5/4 Aoki Film Response
I
found it very thought-provoking to learn about Richard Aoki and the Third World
Liberation Front of 1963 because I had never heard of their efforts prior to
watching the film. The goals of the Aoki and the TWLF, a coalition consisting
of Pan-Asian groups, were to dismiss the racism against minority groups in
school institutions and demand for acceptable ethnic studies at the university.
Aoki played a crucial role of calling for Asian groups to join him in the
movement and display their self-determination to fight for political power and better
representation in the Third World. TWLF demonstrates the idea of decolonization
because they are fighting for an ethnic studies curriculum that doesn’t just
revolve around the teachings of Europe. By resisting, they wish to gain more
knowledge about the cultures of minority groups that comprise of TWLF. Aoki and
the coalition work together to challenge the hegemonic culture that initially
put Asian groups at a disadvantage. Overall, their efforts are very inspiring and act as a large event in history for influencing the ethnic studies programs in several universities.
