5/4 Aoki Film Response

The film presented a lot of the Asian-American struggle people had years ago in which eventually impacted society today. Before watching the film, I had neither no knowledge of the Asian American movement nor knowledge about Richard Aoki and his impacts on the Asian American community. The film presented a lot of ideas in which tie to decolonization and political self-determination because it showed a lot of cultural struggle and resistance. The resistance of Richard Aoki and other Asian Americans at UC Berkeley showed the passion in which eventually evolved into a form of ethnic studies we see in our education today. The struggle was in a sense where we see Aoki talk about internment camps where Japanese-Americans did little to no resistance against the hate people had toward the Japanese and then fighting back the violence that spurred from Aoki’s protest of breaking away from unequal treatment. We can still see Aoki’s ideas be transferred to today’s ideology in a sense where people aren’t as afraid to fight for what they believe in. Although Asians are seen to be quiet and passive, Aoki shows breaks the norm in which allows other Asian-Americans to step out of that comfort zone and expand our knowledge on culture.
