5/30 Fiske & Jordan

In Jordan's article, The Art of Necessity, they discuss the contemporary wave of DIY protest that is taking place of old politics replacing it with propoganda type projects. Jordan pays special attention to street protest and its effectiveness. Because the majority of the public use the roads everyday, it makes sense to take up a space that many people occupy that way people are forced to watch and listen to the protesters' message. This reminded me of the videos we watched in class about queer South Asians and their form of resistance. They occupied streets and did a flash mob in order to showcase and visibilize the queer population.
In Fiske's piece, Shopping for Pleasure, it discusses how shopping is a form of liberation and freedom  for womxn and malls and shopping centers serves as a space for them to escape the expectations of domestic work and love. I thought this article was very interesting because I never critically thought about the social spaces of malls in relation to gender. The article mentioned that although malls were intended for womxn, it was not created by womxn. The patriarchal capitalism that exists within malls and shopping center signify how even social spaces that are intended for womxn's use is still made for the patriarch to profit off of.
