5/25 Kelly Loves Tony Video Question Response
5/25 Angel Truong Kelly Loves Tony Video Question Response
In
the documentary, Kelly Loves Tony, multiplicity
and positionalities of power are negotiated between social aspects such as
gender, culture, and education which contribute to the conflicts that arises in
the couple’s lives. The positionalities of power are negotiated because Kelly
must conform to her in-laws’ expectations that involve female traditional roles
like being a domestic wife and obedient daughter-in-law. Her position creates
problems that multiply to cooking for her family, being reserved, and caring
for her baby. This multiplicity of expectations put onto female Asian Americans
forces Kelly to negotiate or balance her school work and domestic duties and
for her, that is impossible. As an Asian American, Kelly strives for personal
achievement such as higher education which is hindered by Tony’s cultural expectations
and social roles. As a male Asian
American, Tony’s position places him in a higher gender hierarchy that is highlighted
in his culture. Tony is expected to work and provide for his family so
education and domestic work are not his problem. However, his position creates
issues since he does not understand why Kelly would want to strive for education
when she is expected to take care their baby and his family. Therefore, the
varieties of problems Kelly needs to deal with and Tony’s lack of understanding
creates conflict between the couple which eventually leads to their breakup.
