5/25 & 5/30 Fiske/Jordan/Omar
According to Fiske,
shopping becomes an for women to exert some type of power and resist the idea
that they belong to the home. Historically in US society, stores have been the
only site where they could be unaccompanied. I agree that stores have been an
outlet for women to escape the home and use their own knowledge, but shopping
only becomes a source of power if it benefits the patriarchal capitalist
society. For instance, in my best friend’s household, she told me stories where
her father did not like shopping for groceries or clothing. He explained that
he was not “good” at choosing which produce or which clothing would be suitable
for their family. Therefore, her father insisted that her mother always do the
shopping. Through this, the mother is given authority to decide which items to
buy for her household. However, what if my friend’s mother does not enjoy
shopping? Fiske is assuming shopping is desirable by every woman. Furthermore,
recently, there has been a trend of stores closing to convert to an online
experience. This complicates the idea that women go outside of the home to
shop.
In the other article by
Jordan, he talks about using art as a political outlet to voice concerns and
protests. I thought this was a cool idea because it reminded me of the
queer/Indian flash mob. By protesting creatively, I think it brings together
more people as people are known to be drawn to entertainment. Also, artistic
ways of illustrating a cause makes people aware of an issue they may have not
thought of before.
In Omar’s lecture, he
explains how people take cultural forms and then make it their own.
Specifically, he uses decoy as an example to argue that this form of comedy,
becomes a form of survival. This reminded me of comedic Asian YouTubers who
addressed Asian issues through skits, rants, and raps.
