This week’s articles talk
about gender inequality. This article
used the car industry and culture to convey the ideas of male and female roles
within them. As we see the car culture, mainly we see males with the supped-up
cars. Within these social interactions don’t show the homosexuality side.
Because male dominance and masculinity for this hobby. Usually at car meets
there will be very attractive girls posing for these cars, and how women are sexualized
with car magazines. Especially Asian women because they are seen as exotic. The lifestyle of JDM (Japanese Domestic Market)
is to have a Japanese car, Honda, Toyota, Subaru, ect, and to modify it, adding
racing parts, making it lower, and making it faster. At these car meets usually
Asian girls are featured for when people have photo shoots of their cars. Two
things in one picture men like, cars and women. Also in the film industry women
are never the main character for a movie involving cars. There’s also this stereotype
the women are worse drivers then men, but statistics show that men have a
greater portion of car accidents.
The documentary of Kelly Loves Tony illustrates the
difference between generations of Asian American families. Kelly who is a teen
mom wants to be better than what she is now, she wants to go to school even
though she knows she doesn’t have to because the men are supposed to take care
of the finances and the women are to stay at home to take care of the kids. She
wants to go to college but her husband and family doesn’t encourage her to do
so. Basically, the whole documentary she is upset with living with her in-laws.
The whole time I feel like Tony doesn’t understand her at all, and the
relationship is bad, like he doesn’t really consider her wants, and thinks she
should just be what everyone else wants her to be. In the family everyone is
depended on each other, the adults depend on the kids, vice versa. Kelly is
very frustrated with her in laws expectations of school and domestic wife,
because she wants to have this personal achievement due to the culture
influences of the American society.
