5/23- Rodriguez
The car culture has always been big in America. A car
is a typical symbol of America, being free and liberated from any chains. The
movie depicts this car culture and specifically the “rice rocket” car culture in
a bad and inaccurate light. The main actor of the movie is a white cop who is
doing an undercover mission into the racing underground market. It uses color
actors in a very bad way, portraying them as racialized version of their
culture and portraying it in a very bad light despite in real life where “rice
rocket” culture consists of mostly Asian American. This is a problem in a movie
industry in general, where the sight of an Asian actor is still rare. Asian actors
usually take the back seat in a movie, usually being delegate a support or
comedy relief roles. I believe this is not fair for good Asian American actor
whose acting skill rivals that of a white one.
