This week’s article
discusses the culture and gender matters that relate to the automobile
industry. Similar to the symbolic meaning of owning a home, having a car is a
large step towards the American Dream – especially for the man. The article
says that import cars are typically tailored to stand out in order to make the
car “sleeker, sexier, louder, and faster than the ‘original.’” Men like to
customize their cars to their liking as means of asserting their individuality
among everyone. A prominent issue that the article also discusses is the
hyper-sexualization of women. Especially in the movie industry, this is such a
common theme partly because producers have a preconceived notion that these
images of women are what the audience will pay to see. This goes along with the Orientalist way of thinking that Asian women are "exotic" and "mysterious." However, this
objectifying representation of women encourages patriarchy, in which men are
seen to hold the power and women are kept deprived. Overall, the article
relates to my group’s final project because our film focuses on the
misrepresentation of Asian Americans in the Hollywood industry. We touch upon
these similar issues of hypo-sexualizing men and hyper-sexualizing women.
