5/23 Rodriguez + Kelly Loves Tony
This week's article highlights the gender difference of the car industry. The main actor of the movie focuses on a white cop, who is on an undercover mission, goes onto the car racing scene. The movie portrays people of color is a stereotypical/racist way. Even thought the “rice rocket” culture mainly consists of Asian Americans, they do not represent much in the media. Asian American actors either portray the stereotypical Asian nerd to the comic relief of the production. An example of this would be the Indian actor from Big Bang Theory. The Indian actor or Raj acts out as the typical Indian nerd with the accent and shyness is exactly what that Hollywood producers always look for. It is a misrepresentation of Asian roles. In commercials a nd/or music videos , women are us ually portrayed as objects for men to manipulate. Overall, the article relates to what my group is going to do for the final project because our film highlights how the Hollywood industry hypo-sexualizing Asian men, while also hyper-sexualizing Asian women.
In Kelly Love Tony, the moment that Kelly gave birth to Andrew, is the moment her struggles start as she faces the pressure of accepting Mien traditions, while trying to reach her goals. In Mien culture or any similar Asian culture, it is seen as traditions for the daughter-in-law to move into her husband's family home. Kelly struggles to balance her life being a mom, daughter-in-law, and wife. Kelly hates that her husband is not helping her out with the home chores. When she tells Tony to help her, he sees it as Kelly does not like his family. The film shows the complexity of being within Mien culture and American culture. It also shows how "the man of the house" and in-laws have power/authority in a family.
