I found it interesting that Asian American masculinity came at the expense of Asian American women. Since Asian American men were, and probably still are, portrayed as being emasculate, or non masculine, they found ways in which they could distinguish themselves as masculine in Western culture. This in a way brings up matters of authenticity, much like in the “DJing as a Filipino Thing,” article. However the reasons behind authenticating themselves seem very different. Where in this article, Asian American men might be trying to authenticate themselves within the Western car culture, and the Filipino DJ’s were trying to authenticate themselves within the African American hip hop culture. The Asian American men could also be thought to be using the car culture to also validify their own masculinity. They did this mainly by perpetuating orientalist ideas, such as the East being exotic, applying these ideas to both import cars as well as Asian American women.
