5/22 - Kelly Loves Tony
In the last part of Kelly Loves Tony, there is more conflict between the two. As they
continue to argue about their different values, the documentary does not sugarcoat
their lives. Instead, it gives honest insight about how they are feeling. I
thought Tony was a frustrating character. He reinforces the idea of how and
what a woman should be. As a result, Kelly is overwhelmed with emotions and expectations.
The cultural crashes between them are apparent, as Tony is more traditionally Mein
and withholds the idea of nuclear family and values. Meanwhile, Kelly pushes
away the Southeast Asian customs because she wants more independence and
freedom for herself. The conflict of Tony not understanding the significance of
school was difficult to watch. The conversation reminds me of common sexist
values forced upon women. His “mentor” tries to help Tony understand, which I found
interesting how an another man’s words are easier to accept than Kelly. This demonstrates
how hegemonic ideas are learned culturally and reproduced subconsciously.
