5/2 Soo Ah Kwon

The topic of deportation, especially in the Southeast Asian community, never fails to upset me. People come to America to gain freedom and opportunities but then get deported for minor crimes they committed long ago. A large chunk of the people being deported are Cambodian men. Soo Ah Kwon’s article is similar to many articles I have read in the past. It seems like every time I visit a Cambodian American related social media platform, there is a new article regarding the deportation of a Cambodian male. The stories are often very similar. The man committed a super minor crime 15-20 years ago when they were placed in a low income community and now, after turning their lives around, they are being deported. These people have turned their lives around and some of these people have not committed any other crimes but are now being removed from their families and being removed from a country that they call home. It makes me question how “great” America is or how much the government cares about people of color. Are we really free if the government prevents us from having a second chance?
