5/2 - Deportation (late)
When
I first learned about the school to prison to deportation pipeline, this
racialized system seemed surreal. This intricate pipeline was produced for multiple
reasons, but one of them being is to create the good to bad immigrant
dichotomy. The article “Deportating Cambodian Refugees: Youth Activism, State Reform,
and Imperial Statecraft” by Soo Ah Kwon focuses a youth program called AYPAL. This
program is a beautiful space for youth of color to be involved with community
organizing, while being able to learn about their culture. It is also inspiring
of how Southeast Asians youth are in the frontlines of activism.
Although
this article was written in the summer of 2012, this issue is even more so prevalent
to now. I recently became familiar with an organization called 1Love, they demonstrate
resistance towards these deportations. They been working for years with the
community and helped started the #Not1More and #RightToReturn campaigns for
family unification. As hopeless as I feel sometimes about policies, there are
changes constantly happening and sometime I have to just look hard for it. These
organizations bring me so much optimism for the future.
