5/18 Roy & Tony love Kelly
In the article Mobile cultures, Roy talks about the different perspectives of sexuality and ideas of LGBT hold by South Asians and Americans. In South Asians, people are more sensitive and feel pressure about LGBT topics. In the United States, homosexuality seems more acceptable and understandable than in South Asia. I think in most of the Asian countries, the society still doesn’t recognize homosexuality as a normal sexual orientation. Gays and Lesbians in Asian countries are afraid of telling their sexual orientation and feel struggling with their social identity. Roy mentions that the Internet has huge impacts on LGBT community and even the society, which could cause both positive and negative effect to them because the Internet is “double-edged sword”. The Internet not only involves with gender, but also relates to class and other issues. For example, the queer community of South Asian used Internet to communicate and create their social network. These people try to define their social identity through the Internet.
