5/18 reading and video response

In Roy’s article I found it interesting to see how the internet could possibly hinder LGBT movements around the world, whereas most people might think that it always helps.  I had always thought that the speed of the internet positively influenced discussion and the spread of information, however there were some interesting points made in the article.  One of them being that “once that movement gets off the ground, will it merely borrow from existing movements in the West?”  This brings to mind issues of authenticity, such as in the article “DJing as a Filipino Thing,” where Filipinos had to deal with authenticating themselves as DJ’s, which was originally created by the African American community.  It is similar here, where Indians had to deal with creating and connecting LGBT communities in India while being overshadowed by already existing Western LGBT communities.  However they also had to deal with some culturally specific problems in India as well as surrounding countries in that not everyone had access the internet.

In the video documentary “Kelly Loves Tony,” I found it interesting that Tony did not quite understand why Kelly wanted to go to college.  He would have expected that she simply stay at home to take care of their newly born child.  Kelly questioned this idea that a woman’s life basically comes to a halt as soon as she has a child.  She wanted to go to school in order to create a better life for her child as he grew up.  Aside from preconceived notions of what women should do when they have children, Tony did have real concerns that he had to deal with as he had to support the family financially immediately, rather than going to college and getting a job later.  Especially when he was subject to being deported from the country for his criminal past.
