5/16 Shah reading[late]
In Shah’s article “Laotian Daughter’s,” I found it interesting that of the Laotian girls interviewed, they were fairly proud of being Lao, and brought up sentiments that being Lao made them unique. As Shah put it, this was “in contrast to previous studies in which young Mien believed that their parents’ language and culture were old-fashioned and backward.” This brings to mind the Monkey Dance video where the children, in the Cambodian family that was followed, were proud of the traditional dance that they were taught and even went to add their own personal flare inspired by American break dancing. At the same time there were also similar points of conflict between parents and children in both “Laotian Daughters,” and the “Monkey Dance” video where there was a lot of restrictions put on the young women in the family, expecting them to work hard in school, but also to stay home to cook and clean.
