Roy’s Readings
Today’s reading highlights how the
internet can connect marginalized people such as queer South Asians. What
caught my attention in this article is when the author mentions how expressing
sexuality is acceptable in America. This also emphasizes how homosexuality is
also more acceptable in America compare to Asia. This notion is implied and
somewhat supported based on my experience living in America and having parents
who grew up in Vietnam. When one of my cousin confessed that he is gay, there
was a polar response within the whole family. Most of the first generation who
lived in Vietnam were not very supported while the second and third generations
who were raised in America supported his sexuality. My personal life supports
the notion that Americans are more acceptable towards homosexual than Asian
cultures which explains why American terms such as gay, bisexual, transgender,
and queer are used around the world. However, the article mentions that these
terms are based on American culture which hides the cultural differences of
queer individuals. This also conveys the misconception that homosexuality is an
American or Western concept that has influenced East Asian and South Asian
countries. I know many older people in my family still believe that
homosexuality is like a disease that spread from other queer Americans and I
know other older people in Asian countries like South Korea have the same
beliefs as well. This notion is also exaggerated by media or the internet which
many, as mentioned before, believe is the portal to spreading homosexuality.
However, none of this is true. From the article, we can learn to counterattack
this prejudice and use the internet to connect each other and spread support
and awareness of homophobia.
