The Siam reading by Kurup made me slightly emotional since I thought I resonated with that excerpt although I don't identify as Thai. However, my parents used to own a Chinese restaurant when I was younger. When I visited the restaurant I would hear the same conversations and greetings to and from customers. It was upsetting to when Suzie asked "When I get my blue eyes?" It's frustrating that people of color feel like they are below non people of color because of their appearance. Another one of the narratives talked about being an American family despite never seeing the Statue of Liberty. It’s interesting because it seems like there’s an unspoken “guide book” to being American or that there are these experiences that Americans are expected to have. As for Lowe’s article “Heterogeneity, Hybridity, and Multiplicity”, I appreciated that she talked issues other than race or ethnicity. She mentioned that Asian American identity is not fixed and it is not homogenous. Asian Americans look different and have different experiences. Asian Americans, like myself, want to preserve the culture of their home country the country that their family is from but also want to assimilate to Western culture.
