5/11- Kurup/Lowe

The text Assimilation is an interesting, but a bit challenging to read because of all the scene change that cannot be seen visually. I enjoy the different scenes that are set up with many different types of characters. It is very relatable when the author starts talking about the mythic fear that stems from America. It just goes to show that discrimination sometimes goes both ways where Americans are depicted in a bad light. The author also shed some light on American fast food being the reason why Americans can have a weight problem, but it also shows the author falling into the same pit. The author also talks about the problem arising with foreign names. Being an international student, I myself have struggled with this problem. Back in high school, when I transferred in my original plan was to use an American name to reduce people problem with pronouncing my name; however, I was lucky that my Vietnamese name is not too difficult to pronounce and that I can draw the similarity in pronunciation between Viet and Vietnam. I am glad however that I keep using my Vietnamese name.
