5/11 Kurup & Lowe
In
Kuraup’s article, he briefly talks about the differences of living and eating,
etc, between his home country and the United States. Plus, he discusses the
immigration’s life in America; immigrants sometimes feel uncertainty and
uncomfortable with the new environment. I really like the “mythic fears” part
that he mentioned in the article because I had this similar “fears”. Before I
came to the America, I hear that most of the Americans were fat because they
only ate hamburger and other fast foods. I also had been told that most of the
American girls had very open mind about sex and had complicated social
relationship. Even though I have been living and studying in here more than
three years, I am still struggling with being a “American” because of the culture
background and identification.
In
Lisa Lowe’s article, she talks about the identity and adaptation of different
cultures of immigrants and how does the society view these immigrants. She also
talks about what means to her as a Chinese-American. She said “I feel Chinese
is when I’m embarrassed I’m not more Chinese.” Oppositely, I feel Chinese is
when I’m embarrassed that I’m not more American; have strong Chinese accent, eat
Chinese food and watch Chinese TV shows, etc.
