Week 2 - "DJing as a Filipino Thing"

One thing that pointed out to me was the part about how hip-hop transcends through all races. Brain Currid quotes, "...in the darkness of the club, the social significances of skin color disappear." I agree with what this quote means that hip hop is not only associated with African-Americans. Hip hop's international appeal does not just stop at the color of one's skin. Even though I do not understand Korean, I do still like Kpop. Music is universal and it transcends through all races and all languages. It's all about the feelings you get from listening to a song. When Q-Bert said that he does not represent his race only, but the human race. I thought that usually artists take pride in representing their race in the music industry. I guess Q-Bert was different. Also, I thought it was important that Filipino DJs knew they were not copying off a culture, but creating their own culture where they can self-express their feelings about being racialize.

I understand why Filipinos sometimes get mad when they are categorized 'Asian American' when they have a different culture. It's like when you fill out your race on a test and when your race does not show up, you have to check the closest one. It's not fair. Filipinos should have their own category and should not be seen invisible because of their involvement in DJing. I can somewhat relate to this. Usually when people ask me, what kind of Asian are you? I tell them I'm a Vietnamese-Chinese-American. I know that is long, but I do see myself in all three of those categories. I added American because I wanted to show that I was born in America, but also added my two other ethnicities. I sometimes get confused about what kind of Asian I am because I'm ethnically Vietnamese, but at the same time, I'm Chinese. Also, my skin color isn't the typical Vietnamese or Chinese person, so people always get confused about what kind of Asian am I. It's hard to give out an answer that would define me.
