Vergara
In
the article, Ethnographic Explorations of
Asian America by Benito M. Vergara talks about immigrants, specifically
Filipinos in specific areas. He suggests that immigrants settle at a specific
local, for example in that article he mentions large Filipino population in the
bay area, Seattle and other places. I also have notice this trend. My mom's
side of the family are all from Vietnam but their ethnicity is Chinese.
Majority of my family migrated to the US between 1980-1990. They wanted to
leave Vietnam to a new country, preferably the United States, but because they
lack of English skills they wanted to settle where they can remain attached to
their roots. They picked the city of Oakland, where there are a majority of
Chinese who speak the Cantonese dialect. They were indeed born and raised in
Vietnam but grew up with a mix of traditions. If they were to stick to their
Vietnamese roots they would ideally choose to settle in San Jose, where many
Vietnamese people migrate there. When reading this article, I also notice this
trend of races sticking together. For example, in High School, I noticed that
the students who were from another country stuck together, in their groups
speaking their native tongues, it was very rare for one to wonder from the pack
and join us natives. But when they did most of the time they stood there in silence
because they were unfamiliar with the topics we referred to for example
American TV shows and celebrities.
