The study of philosophy
Culture
could be philosophical. In the article “The Study of Philosophy” by Antonio
Gramsci revolves around three main aspects of language, common sense, and popular
religion. Gramsci talks about how “Philosophy cannot be separated from the
history of philosophy, nor can culture from the history of culture”, I believe
he means that you can’t be this without knowing the history “one cannot be a philosopher,
without having a consciousness of its historicity”. In a sense of culture, I believe
what he is saying that you can’t really identify something without knowing the
past. Which for the most part I do agree on. For example, I am half Chinese,
mixed with German, Scottish, and Irish, but I mainly identify as Chinese
because I am more involved with that culture than anything else. I can say I am
White, but in a sense, I have no pride over it because I have nothing to be
proud of due to the lack of knowledge of the ‘white’ culture. Gramsci also
talks about that a “Great culture can be translated into the language of
another great culture” and “can be a world-wide means of expression. But a
dialect cannot do this”. I believe what he is trying to say the importance of
fully understanding one’s culture in order of another to express it correctly.
