In the article The Politics of Race, Bindi V. Shah address the issue of a “racial belonging”. How a specific race has its own stereotype. The author states that 2nd generation Laotians are at risk and it’s important to establish organizations that can help individuals cope. I do see the second-generation kids facing a dilemma. In my experiences, the Asian values and teachings are very different from America. In America it’s all about rights, and that may influence the younger people to rebel against their parents. Also in America, typically and probably have more opportunities than they did in their homeland. Some many have the American dream because they have a shot in pursing their desires rather than listening and having their parents choose their path form. I think in a sense the 2nd generation can break the traditional values their family once had. Another issue is stereotyping. Growing up I notice that Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, basically the light skin Asians were stereotypically the “smart” ones, the ones who were good in math and all. But when it came to darker Asians such as Vietnamese, Laos, and Cambodians, they were seen as the “less successful” Asians, the ones involved in gangs. Organizations can help get communities involved and learn about social issues.
