monkey dance
In the documentary monkey
dance the 1st generation kids struggled between two cultures. Adapting to one
and preserving the other. The kids, especially the girls had expectations. The
main reason couples decide to move to America is to have a better life than
they did. I experience this first hand. I am first generation on my mom side
since I am half white. My dad coming from a poor family also wishes me to do
better than they did. My mom would tell me stories of how she escaped from
Vietnam and how she was placed in a camp for her punishment. That she wanted a
better future for her future kids. My mom and the ten brothers and sister came
over from Vietnam to America, almost everyone had two kids. Some of the parents
stayed tradition where as my family since my mom married an American. Some of
my girl cousins weren’t allowed out and the boy were, because in the Asian
culture that’s how it is. The girls were stay home and help around the house
while her brother was allowed to go hang with friends. As a kid, I didn't
listen to my parents, got bad grades and all I wanted to do was play around. It
was middle school when I noticed I was the "failure" of the family,
always comparing me to the other cousins. High School was I stepped my game up
now I'm considered one of the smart kids now. That made my mother proud, but
now the next step is getting a good paying job to support the family.
