Monkey dance and Laotian Daughters
In the documentary film Monkey Dance, three first generation Asian American are the main protagonists of the film. All of their parents are immigrants from Asian countries where their living conditions are very poor. They come to the U.S. in hope that their children can have a better life than themselves. The documentary demonstrates the difficulties that these households have to face in order to make a living because immigrant families are usually low income families. Therefore, these children live under a higher expectation and pressure from their parents that they have to be successful in school and do nothing but school. I personally can relate to this because I am an immigrant myself. I immigrated to the U.S. when I was a thirteen-year-old. I was told to go to college and get a good paying job after I get my degree and I here I am as the first generation in my family to go to college. It is tough to do all these things that you are expected to do without having time for what you really want to do. The article Laotian Daughters is another demonstration of how the first generation immigrants trying to make a living in the U.S. There are always a language barrier for these family and it makes other people isolate them from the community.
