[Late] Apr 13 readings (I presented woohoo)

For our readings we had to read “Truth and Power” by Michel Foucault and an excerpt from The Prison Notebooks by Antonio Gramsci.
“Truth and Power” discusses truths are determined and are spread through by society. Foucault goes on to discuss how “intellectuals” can use determined truths to their advantage rank up in society. I find this entire concept interesting especially in these times where we have to fight for what actual facts are. I want to bring up North Korea because I know the government makes the people think they live an amazing life when they don’t know life outside their country.
In The Prison Notebooks, Gramsci discusses philosophy and how it’s spread. Gramsci sees philosophy as a way of thinking and awareness of one’s position in the world. Gramsci then brings the point of common sense versus good sense. In a situation where you see a phone left on a table, common sense would be to leave it as you saw it. Good sense would be to bring it to a lost-and-found or to look for the owner.
Personally I see myself more inclined to good sense more than common sense by Gramsci’ definitions. I really dislike how ignorance is the norm but I do see the appeal of not involving yourself
