[Late] 4/18 Daly City
Benito M. Vergara Jr.’s “Betrayal, Class fantasies, and the Filipino Nation in Daly City” is about the increasing Filipino population in Daly City and how it doesn’t fit the stereotype of being the successful model minority. Daly City has become place where Filipinos can feel at home to their culture. One thing that stood out to me was the conflict of choosing to leave or stay. My parents had to choose this decision to leave or stay, but the stories I heard from them made it sound more simple. My Grandpa had the chance to open a dentist place in Alameda and he took it, my parents, aunts and uncles were all grown adults so the majority of them wanted to move to America for better job opportunities. The ones that did stay died so I don’t know why they chose to stay. The main idea of them moving was the same though- they wanted to support more of the extended family so they went to where the money was. My family was poorer so my parents never had a maid, so I assume they just grew dependant. My uncles would also joke “who needs a maid when you have kids!” so I think they found a nice mix of both cultures.
