Gramsci, Foucalt 4/13

In Gramsci’s article, Gramsci refutes the idea that philosophy is only used for those in higher power or intellect. Instead, he argues that the study of philosophy is a way of thinking that is meant for everyone in society. He proves this by stating that philosophy can be embedded in language, common sense/good sense, and popular religion. By reasoning philosophy in this way, I agree with Gramsci that philosophical thinking can be used by the masses. His theory can be seen in contemporary times by the fact that individual ideas of the world and of themselves is shaped by the external environment. On the other hand, Foucault’s article talks about how truth and power continually intersect and challenge each other. Truth of information can be more believable when one possesses societal power. However, I think due to the immediate spread of information through technology and social media, a collective can spread as much truth just as much as a person with some form of power (political, economical, etc.). For instance, even though Kendall Jenner possesses social and economical power and Pepsi has a reputation for providing a quality drink worldwide, their actions were not dismissed by the masses as many people critiqued their advertisement and spoke a different truth from what Pepsi and Kendall were attempting to portray.
