Ghandi/James Journal 4/27 - Leigh Bagood
I can relate Ghandi’s ideas in Hind Swaraj to Scott’s ideas of “everyday forms of resistance.” Ghandi’s methods of resisting European colonial rule was not a huge, violent rule but a gradual “decolonization of culture.” He advocated for a spiritual reconnection to Indian culture, resistance without direct confrontation. His idea of freeing India from English rule, by breaking India’s dependency on England, would most likely involves many small acts of everyday resistance. The way he discussed English influence on India also reminded me of the Philippines’ colonial rule by the Spanish and the U.S. The Philippines, however, has retained much of their culture from the Spanish and U.S., especially because of how long they were under Spanish rule. And like India’s dependence on English machinery and technology, the Philippines was also economically dependent on the U.S.
