Filipino DJ's 4/11 by Deanna Stilwell
Tiongsong Jr.'s article on Filipino DJ's brought
new things to light for me. For instance the fact that Filipinos don't define
themselves as Asian, but as a different ethnic group because of their culture.
I can certainly relate to that because I have friends who didn't realize Filipino's
were considered Asian. Personally, I consider Filipinos to be under the Asian
ethnic group because of region and culture. I can see why Filipinos would want
to identify as something else because Spanish is a part of their culture as
well. Although I have acknowledged that their culture is different, so it's
hard to understand what ethnic group Filipinos should actually be in. Filipinos believe that hip hop is relevant to their culture and it's a
"rite of passage" because it's been a part of their life and they've
never questioned it. They do acknowledge that they did not create it. People
who are or were apart of the hip hop community see that new ethnicity's are
taking over what they knew and it has become less about the culture and more
about what's trending. It means less when people join something because
it's a fad instead of because they are actually interested in the subject. I
agree that they are losing a part of their culture because they grew up with
hip hop in their life whereas others who are popular DJ's now are only popular
because of a trend. It's a big part of their identity and it's not only them
its about other cultures who identified with hip hop as well. It's being taken
away from them.
