DJing As A Filipino Thing 4/11- Viet Nguyen
The reading
was a very interesting read that brings up quite a few questions. One of these
questions was that whether it is appropriate to label the hip-hop culture as
purely African American and thus hip-hop music that are not made by African
American, would such thing hold as much value. Also would music made by
Filipino who aren't African American hold as much legitimacy as music made by
African American artist. I believe that it does still hold value in a musical
sense; however in a cultural sense it does not hold any value that is related
to the African American value, but Filipino value. Since for some DJ in the
article, they just grow up with this hip-hop culture not knowing about the
origin of such culture. So it is fair to say that it is integrated into the
Filipino culture and one of the mission of Filipino DJ is to share their unique
interpretation of hip-hop music with everyone else. This branch of hip-hop
music still has the origin of being developed by African American; however it
also now holds the significance of Filipino culture within itself.
